DES MOINES, Iowa – U.S. Rep. Cindy Axne, D-Iowa, released the first negative ad in Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District race.

The ad, titled “Baggage,” is intended to show the difference in voting records between Axne and former U.S. Rep. David Young on protecting health care for Iowans.

“I’ve never lost sight of what’s important to Iowa,” Axne tells Iowans in the ad. “I’ve fought for quality, affordable health care and lower drug prices…I want to lighten the load for all Iowans.”

It claims Young voted to end the protection of preexisting conditions.

This ad and her first ad entitled, “Came Through” are running in the Des Moines media market.

Young’s campaign manager, Andy Swanson, called the ad misleading.

“Cindy Axne must be feeling desperate about her re-election efforts to proudly start airing her first negative attack ad of the 2020 campaign in August. It is rather unfortunate she’s merely rehashing the same falsehoods and misrepresentations she used in 2018 to mislead Iowans on David’s record of protecting the health care of Iowans and of those with pre-existing conditions,” he said.

“David has fought to protect Iowans with pre-existing conditions and had amendments included in passed legislation to do just that. He will defend the rights of Iowa families to choose the care which is right for them, and not let bureaucrats stand between doctors and patients.

“What Cindy Axne needs to explain is why she supports a public option, which would put 52 of Iowa’s 90 rural hospitals at risk of financial ruin and closing, and carries the potential of tax increases on Americans to pay for it. In addition, putting that many more people into the Medicare program designed for seniors could reduce health care access and benefits promised to them,” Swanson added.
